Hanafee

Just what we need some sort of Arab financial engine running our ports - I wonder if these ports are where the oil comes in. Wouldn't that be the cat's meow; OPEC threatens oil supply, DPOW slows our ports, and not to mention the basic fear that the next terror attack comes via a port security infiltration.

What is the administration thinking?

Get back to:
1. War on Terror
2. Secure our Borders
3. Trade Policy
4. Cut Taxes

UPDATE: Look if the administration thinks we should do this deal then it is up to the administration to make the case. If UAE is a good partner then have them renounce the jihads against western civilization, cancel the validity of the fatwas, and basically stop the radical fundamental Islamic drive to place free societies under Muslim rule. If they can't do that, what exactly is the point of having a Arab/islamic trading partner - OPEC hasn't been so great for society though I admit retirement funds that are energy centric seem to be working out well.

PS: The cartoon outrage removed the last bit of credibility you had with me.

Laugh and the world laughs with you!

http://www.michellemalkin.com/mt/oct05-tb.cgi/3869

Ah I am not worried

Regarding Jeff Chester's article: Hijacking the Internet. Clever title but the premise is lost on me. People hijack communication all of the time, it is the implicit nature of ideas.

1. The article reminds me that many people confuse access with speed including the author.
2. I agree with the article that there is no reason why communities can't be ISPs.
3. The Internet is a free market and to the extent content can be sold, it is a retail engine. That is what makes it work. Linking targeted marketing, URL traffic with the NSA in some dark conspiratorial sense doesn't resonate.
4. The vast majority of content I consume is created by private enterprise and bloggers. I pay for speed. I pay for access. I pay for content at WSJ directly, and everything else by advertising or purchase of service. The Internet isn't owned by the people it is paid for by the people. The civic-minded content I get is all created by private entities like Kos, Instapundit, and Gawker.
5. Nobody goes on the web for free. Nobody gets a URL and access to the Internet for free either. So if network providers think they can charge more to Internet companies maybe they are right. And if Blogger wants to charge me for this lame mostly inactive blog I will quit! That is the market in action.
6. The only role for government is establish law determining digital property rights. It's fun to think about the constitutional applications of digital property law.

I guess I am pretty much a free market guy. I worry more about what UN control of the Internet or another campaign finance reform law will do to civic-minded private voices than what happens if Google's bandwidth rates go up or Comcast wants to deliver original content on their network.

PU on the EU (and the UN for good measure)

hattip to rhythm master for THISfor a thought provoking read.

Posted this comment at one of my favorite sites!

The site is paidcontent.org, apparently I don't know how to trackback in blogger. I really like the Trax non-linear animation, blend shape, and modeling by curves sections. I have the full apple package too. I am finding Soundtrack Pro/ Garageband 2 to be fun although I plan to figure out a workflow for protools le soon.

The writing side of things is pretty frustrating and exhilarating all at the same time. I have a knack for writing even the simplest story element into a corner - sometimes within a couple of lines. How did people write before Google? I know libraries, imagination, etc...

Making incremental steps towards a fun cartoon that bbtv created with the help of Oleg at GWHA.

I was working with a very talented writer on a different story line that just isn't going to happen. I don't know if I'll ever hear from him again. Damn.

Underneath all of the creative stuff though is the idea and belief I can break the current economic model around content production by having a digital media strategy that leverages technology to create storylines appropriate for a new type of audience while retaining copyright. There is also a component of integrating the audience into the creation process - part of the whole any member of a digital content economy can be at any given time a creator, a distributor, and a consumer.

I thought to blog this before - I am starting now.

Andromeda’s Heart

Check out this cool science site! What really struck me about the article is :
Information systems reflect their organizational setting

Having spent some hard time at the crossroads between systems and processes myself, Klings observation resonates. My comment is that if you are not willing to change the organization chances are it is not worth the cost of developing or evolving systems. Also I have found that most beneficial tweaks to systems and processes are achieved in the earliest moments of discovery and analysis. I also like the 'who owns the data' point; this is always the rallying cry where system analysis points to potential organizational dysfunction.

Back to the article and health care transformation...I wonder if Hilary hasn't figured out that digitizing healthcare leads could lead to a national healthcare government org - sort of grabbing the dog by the tail. Here are two points that hit home with me, but read the two posts above.

"Pay as you go systems are in trouble throughout the world in good part because of changes in the number of workers per retiree, but also because of politically determined decisions that changed the system from saving for old age to an inefficient and complicated welfare system for some of the elderly."

"Just as important are the political implications of Federal fiscal behavior. Tax revenue from social security taxes at present exceed payments to retirees. This excess is counted as part of the growing Social Security Trust Fund, but in fact also enters into the consolidated Federal budget account, and helps reduce the reported spending deficit. Reported deficits during the past decade would have been much larger if social security was not running a surplus during this whole time period."

Bristle cone pines and science works

Over at Tech Central Station is a good article addressing climate change by Roy Spencer.

Broadcast nets at war with the Bush administration

Perhaps war is slightly over the top, but being such a huge fan of PL I am not arguing.
Here are my thoughts expanding on whether the broadcast nets are going to even be relevant in four years (and my first try at a trackback):
1. Until an individual gets online, and probably has a broadband connection, they are surrounded by the establishment (MSM liberals) and isolated from many events and opinions. Just think of your friends that have access to blogs, Drudge, heck even talkingpoints and their knowledge and presence of mind versus your friends who only watch network news and read the paper. It's a big difference. I think our elected officals get this, but don't know what to do.
2. I have not appreciated until now how fundamental broadband access is to the continuation of liberty and how unimportant the so called free broadcasters are to the continuation of liberty. I think Michael Powell got this one.
3. I want the FCC to deregulate, to define and enforce spectrum ownership where it is technically necessary but not own or grant (free) spectrum to commercial enterprise. So I guess I am at odds with the common good sort of thinking. And by the way, I'll happily pay for a la carte programming.
4. In the near-term, we are already seeing the collapse of the relevance of programming decisions. Whether it is technology like video on demand or Google letting people like me create my own blog – there is the movement to expand the amount of choice, which is an expression of liberty. And that is a good thing!

Bad News for free markets and competition

Most of those holding views against Powell will hold the communications industry back from competition, economic freedom and the creation of wealth. Diplomad has the latest on U.N. efforts to alleviate the disaster in southeast Asia. I pass it along without comment because I don't think that any comment whatsoever is necessary:

. . . WFP (World Food Program) has "arrived" in the capital with an "assessment and coordination team." The following is no joke; no Diplomad attempt to be funny or clever: The team has spent the day and will likely spend a few more setting up their "coordination and opcenter" at a local five-star hotel. And their number one concern, even before phones, fax and copy machines? Arranging for the hotel to provide 24hr catering service. USAID folks already are cracking jokes about "The UN Sheraton." Meanwhile, our military and civilians, working with the super Aussies, continue to keep the C-130 air bridge of supplies flowing and the choppers flying, and keep on saving lives -- and without 24hr catering services from any five-star hotel . . . . The contrast grows more stark every minute.

Okay, one comment: I really hope that Diplomad is a fraudulent site with only pretend knowledge of the U.N.'s efforts regarding disaster relief in southeeast Asia.

Posted by Pejman Yousefzadeh at 05:36 PM | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0)

This can't be -

<img src="http://www.wxplotter.com/images/ft/nq.php?val=2750"
alt="I am nerdier than 83% of all people. Layout some thoughts I have, read the help file so I know how to post with links and such, and finish the who am I description so if anyone besides Rhythm Master reads this they will have a clue of where I am coming from.

The first carrier that enables a la carte pricing will establish market dominance.
1. Yes I know there is a GAO report which should and will be linked here.
2. As far as product growth, cable VOD is winning. The market hasn't quite connected to a pricing mechanism yet. I'll have to layout the case here.
3. The basic content model has producer, programmer, advertiser, distributor and consumer. Each playing a fixed role. The future content model has one twist, each entity may play any, or multiple roles in a given transaction. Hat tip to gwha engineers. I believe that a shift in transactions from major content producers to individually produced content is occuring.
4. I hope the telcos don't try to compete with satellite and cable with essentially the same approach to packages and pricing.

OK to the help file.

Testing

is that my voice?
